How to Perfect Time Management
You are a busy college student. Maybe you play sports or are in clubs, maybe you work or have a ton of hobbies. Point blank- you’re busy and there is only so much time in the week. So how do you accomplish all the tasks on your to-do list? By perfecting your time management. Displayed in this article, you will find some helpful tips, tricks, and advice to ensure your satisfaction at the end of your busy week.
To start, at the beginning of each week, sit down and write a list of all the tasks and events you would like to achieve by the end of the week. Then, number each task in order of its priority; the most important item listed at the top, and with the least important listed at the bottom. Afterward, place a calculated and realistic hour and date next to each item to remind you when you would like to accomplish this task. Next, fold your sheet so that only the first item is visible. Then get to work. Focus solely on one task at a time. Multitasking might feel like you are getting more done but it can serve as a disadvantage by causing distractions and overwhelming you. Finishing one task at a time will help you feel more fulfilled and comfortable at the completion of that task.
Now that you have a list and a deadline for each task, it’s time to get started. “Getting started”- widely regarded as the most dreadful task on your list. However, when the week is coming to an end and you are looking back at your list, there is something that is much worse than having started- procrastination. Overcoming procrastination is its own task but it is the most important. Some ways to overcome procrastination and start checking off your to-do list is to start early. Start early in the week and start early in the day. Dedicate certain hours of each day to each task and fulfill those hours. Remove distractions. Place your phone in the other room, turn off the music and the television and remove yourself from any company. A fun tip to get motivated is to watch or read a motivational speech, read inspirational quotes or set up a reward for yourself. By following these tips, not only will they help you fulfill your weekly goal, but you will also be practicing self-discipline and control. These are muscles just like your legs or your brain, you need to work them out. Following these tips each week will make it easier to complete all the tasks in your future.
The final advice to help perfect your time management is to relax. Yes, you heard that right, relax. If you are realistic with yourself and your weekly list by doing the steps to get each task checked off, by Sunday night you will be fine. However, during the week when you are accomplishing your goals your stress level may rise. So make sure, with all the steps you are taking to getting your task completed, you are also taking time to destress. That does not mean to be lazy, unproductive or procrastinate. It simply means to breathe, take a mini-break when you need to. Embrace your productivity and be happy with the work you are accomplishing. Reward yourself and your brain by taking a moment to simply relax and reset. Practice these steps and you will be on the path to managing your time effectively, consistently and perfectly.
